What is the difference between Discipleship and Salvation?

Salvation is an instantaneous miraculous occurrence where the Spirit of God causes us to be "born again" spiritually. We are in a moments time, transferred from the kingdom of darkness into Jesus' Kingdom of Light. Discipleship is what follows salvation and is a lifelong process of learning how to walk in Jesus' footsteps.

Is every Christian automatically a disciple of Jesus Christ?

Yes and no. After salvation every believer is now born again and can become a growing disciple of Jesus. Sadly, many never grow or mature in their daily walk with Jesus and remain infants in their faith. A disciple is someone that is following their Master daily.

What are the five basic requirements of a disciple?

Every disciple submits to an older believer that can help instruct them. A disciple makes it their goal to learn about Jesus' words and ministry as contained in the Scripture. Every disciple needs to not only learn about Jesus' life, words and ministry, they need to imitate them. Finally, every growing disciple desires to fulfill the Great Commission given my Jesus to go and make more disciples.

Is not discipleship the job of the Church leadership?

Yes and no. The Church leadership should be actively engaged in discipling its membership, but the responsibility does not stop with them. Every believer has a personal responsibility to be growing daily in their discipleship walk with Jesus. In addition, the Great Commission was not simply given to Church leadership but to every believer. Each of us has a personal responsibility to make disciples.

How do I grow in my faith?

Jesus said it was better for Him to go away so the Holy Spirit would come and live inside every believer. (see John 16:7) Since we have the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, we must begin our faith journey seeking to understand the will and ways of God revealed in the Scriptures. If you have never read the Bible before, begin in the Gospel of John and ask the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart as you follow Jesus' life, death and resurrection. Read the Word of God daily and pray often for wisdom, insight, and to grow. God will be delighted to answer your prayer! Next, find someone older in the Lord to discuss your questions with and your knowledge base and faith will begin to grow.
